, dagen, he didn't have the votes to do it. so nancy pelosi is going to have to provide a lot of votes to get this done. but, you know, here's the thing i think is really interesting about this whole debate. i heard one of your previous news segments saying oh this is going to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars. it's not going to come anywhere near reducing the deficit by a trillion dollars. if you do this tax increase on the rich, you maybe raise 40 billion dollars a year. that's not nothing, but 40 billion dollars over a year over ten years that's 400 billion. we're running a trillion dollars deficit. this is not a solution and not serious. that's why it always comes back to dealing with the spending side of the aisle because that's where the deficits come from. dagen: last thing, steve, what about the fate of house speaker john boehner because there's a lot more at play than just raising taxes on people who make more than a million dollars with what we saw happen last week? >> yeah, you know, i have always been a fan of john boehner's. i've known him for 20 years. i think he's

to see what happens when you let partisan democrats like harry reid and nancy pelosi call the shots. >> marty, you are calling on the democrat line. what is your reaction? caller: the president needs to get the republicans come back in from christmas holiday. >> what do you think is gonna happen? >> we are on the verge of a fiscal cliff and they are still on vacation. >> let's go to mike in texas, on our line for republicans. >> i agree with the first guy. i wish they would have a little backbone and force obama and reid into not giving in to them. they need to set a budget and stick with a budget, and what they are trying to do is they want more money so they can increase the debt again, and they are about to run this country, as far as i am content. host: out the you think this will end up? caller: i hope boehner holds to his guns. i think the million-dollar deal is a good deal where anybody making over a million dollars pace a little bit more money, but i do not buy that $250 deal. host: that's good to marry in florida. c-span.e on caller: i believe the average american should no

mcconnell and leader pelosi to receive an update on the ongoing fiscal cliff negotiations. that's all the information that we have. we don't know what those leaders spoke about with the president during those call bus i would say just parsing the words here a little bit of this statement, to receive an update does not sound like the president was somehow calling them to issue an new offer or to force some kind of a deal to a head. it sounds like he was checking in with those leaders to find out what's going on or what might be possible at this point. we are working on getting you more information on exactly what was said on those calls just yesterday from hawaii, guys. >> eamon, thank you for keeping us up to date, the view from d.c. let's just return to the discussion we were having with wolfgang coaster about what's happening with dollar yen and this huge move over three months, whether the dollar has accelerated, 11, 12% against the yen. wolfgang what does that mean for people sitting at home? >> the japanese are trying to get their products to be more comp pet it was than the u.s.
